The spiritual father of the Euro-Atlantic Association in Poland was
Kazimierz Dziewanowski, the late but unforgettable publicist and Poland's
Ambassador to the United States - recollect those who in the first half
of the 90s decided to create a non-governmental organization supporting
Poland's efforts to join the North Atlantic Treaty Organization and obtain
security guarantees from the countries of the West.Calling the association
to life, they wrote in the declaration adopted on March 29, 1994:
"The situation, that has been taking shape in Europe and the world
for the last four years, gives Poland chances it has not had for at least
two centuries. There appeared a possibility for an advantageous change
of Poland's geopolitical situation by the removal of a double outflanking
(from East and West) that twice cost us our independence. Today, chances
for Poland's becoming part of integrated and favorably developing union
of European countries, connected with accession to European and Euroatlantic
security structures - should these become implemented - will put an end
to this outflanking and ensure our country a permanent feeling of security."
Association founder members:
Andrzej Ananicz, Bogdan Borusewicz, Zbigniew Bujak, Janusz Dobrosz,
Kazimierz Dziewanowski , Jerzy Eysymontt, Bronisław Geremek,
Gustaw Gottesman , Przemysław Grudziński, Artur Hajnicz, Antoni
Z. Kamiński, Bronisław Komorowski, Mikołaj Kozakiewicz , Edward Krzemień,

Maria Stolzman, Stanisław Stomma, Hanna Suchocka, Piotr Szczepański, HenrykSzlajfer,

The Polish Euro-Atlantic Association is a non-governmental, apolitical
and non-profit organization. It can be a member of national and international
organizations of similar aims. A Polish citizen or a foreigner can become a
member of the Association. New members are accepted by the Board.
Bronisław Komorowski, the president:
"I encourage those who feel jointly responsible for creating Poland's
security policy to meet us. Understanding of mutual intentions is inevitable,
but for eschewing devastating political war, and possibly also for reaching
consensus bearing fruit of certain mutual activities, which would bring
good effects at the point of Poland's entry to NATO."
The Polish Euro-Atlantic Association realizes its objectives by means
of:
conferences and discussion meetings as well as participation in different
undertakings on political and military integration;
seminars devoted to defense, armed forces and their missions;
educational and publishing activities.
Authorities:
Council: President - Janusz Onyszkiewicz, members - Artur Hajnicz,
Jerzy Holzer, Bronisław Komorowski, Janusz Niedziela, Andrzej Olechowski,
Longin Pastusiak, Marek Pernal, Jacek Saryusz-Wolski, Eugeniusz Smolar,
Piotr Szczepański, Maria Wągrowska, Andrzej Wielowieyski.
Board: President - Bronisław Komorowski, Vice-Presidents - Piotr Szczepański,

Janusz Niedziela, Krystian Piątkowski.
Two main objectives of Poland in foreign policy, namely membership in
the North Atlantic Treaty Organization and European Community have been
met. Poland became NATO member on March 12, 1999 and EU member on May 1,
2004.
Also the main objective for the calling of the Euro-Atlantic Association,
that is operation for our country's membership in the most significant
organizations for world's democratic security, seized to be timely. But
there have appeared other ones: the fullest possible political, military
and economic integration of Poland within both institutions so as to benefit
from multilateral, allied cooperation.
However, we all have been facing new serious threats to international
security, mainly terrorism. They trigger a need for debate on how to cope
with them.
The Polish Euro-Atlantic Association comprises a good discussion forum
on foreign, security and defense policies - of our country and our partners
to the west and to the east of our borders. Participants in conferences
and meetings in 2004 asked Mr. Adam Rotfeld, secretary of state at the
Ministry of Foreign Affairs about the security policy of the European Union,
and Mr. Jan Maria Rokita, MP, why should Poles die for Nice? Mr. Jerzy
Szmajdziński, Minister of National Defense claimed that 40% of Polish land
forces, according to NATO demands, will be able to operate beyond our borders,
but that security guarantees remain the "skeleton" of the Atlantic Alliance.
Mr. Kazimierz Ujazdowski, MP, wondered whether Poland participates in a
"new deal" of cards in international policy?
